Is China's dominance in solar panel manufacturing — roughly 80% of global module capacity — actually a bad thing for the energy transition? I keep going back and forth on this. On one hand, cheap Chinese panels drove global prices down about 80% in a decade, which is why my neighbor in Arizona could finally afford a rooftop system. On the other hand, the U.S. and Europe are now slapping tariffs on those same panels to protect domestic factories, and I honestly can't tell if that protects innovation or just slows installations. So: would a world with four or five competing solar manufacturing hubs, instead of one dominant one, be better for the planet even if panels cost more?
