When I re-read 'The Great Gatsby' as an adult, I noticed how much of the story hinges on class and the illusion of the American Dream, but in high school I just saw it as a tragic love story. Do we lose something by over-analyzing literature in academic settings, or does deeper analysis actually enrich our reading experience? I'm torn because I've had both moments where a teacher's insight blew my mind and times when dissecting every symbol felt like it drained the life out of a book.
