Should schools teach history as debate, not just dates?

We teach history in schools as a linear timeline of names and dates, but that approach often misses the messy, contested nature of the past. I've read conflicting accounts of the same event, like the fall of the Roman Empire, and scholars still argue over fundamental causes. Does focusing on factual recall actually prepare students to think critically about historical narratives, or does it just encourage memorization?
