We keep hearing that 'soft skills' are the real key to career success, but in my ten years of hiring, I've seen technical ability trump charm almost every time. Sure, communication matters, but a brilliant coder who's a bit awkward will always beat a smooth talker who can't ship. Maybe we've overcorrected in glorifying emotional intelligence; sometimes hard skills are just harder to fake. Is it time to rebalance our obsession with soft skills?
