Volunteering at a local food bank last Thanksgiving, I saw how much of the donated effort goes to sorting items that expire within days. We threw away nearly a third of what we received. Is most charity work actually inefficient because it focuses on feel-good action rather than systemic change? I think yes, at least in this country, where donation logistics are often ad hoc and poorly coordinated. But maybe the emotional payoff for volunteers justifies some waste, since it keeps people engaged long-term.
