Volunteering abroad sounds noble, but after two trips to build schools in Guatemala, I wonder if we're doing more harm than good. The local community had skilled workers who could have done the job, yet we flew in with no construction experience and took away their paid work. I've read that some projects create dependency and undermine local economies, yet the industry keeps growing. Can we honestly call this charity when it might be hurting the very people we intend to help?
