Vertical farming is being hailed as the future of agriculture, but the energy costs are astronomical. A single lettuce head grown indoors can consume around 2,000 kWh per square meter annually, and most of that electricity still comes from fossil fuels. I've visited a local vertical farm that boasted about producing greens year-round, yet their carbon footprint per kilogram was higher than a traditional field farm in summer. Are we really solving food security, or just relocating the problem while pretending to be green?
