Is vertical farming truly sustainable for food security?
Vertical farming in urban centers often gets praised as the future of agriculture, but I'm skeptical about its real impact on food security. Growing lettuce indoors in Chicago might save water, but the energy required for LED lighting and climate control is massive, and most vertical farms still rely on fossil fuels. When I crunched the numbers for a small-scale setup, the operational costs were three times higher per pound than field-grown produce. Can we honestly call this sustainable when it only works for high-value crops and premium markets, leaving staple foods like wheat or rice untouched? I think we need to focus on improving soil health and water efficiency in traditional farming first before betting on warehouse greens.
