Is the open-plan office really better for productivity?
The push for open-plan offices has become almost dogma in architecture, but I'm skeptical. After working in both layouts, the constant noise and lack of visual privacy in open plans seem to hurt deep focus more than they help collaboration. We can talk about flexibility all we want, but the evidence from our own cognitive performance suggests we're paying a hidden tax. So, is the open-plan office really better for productivity, or have we just convinced ourselves it is?
