Is Stoicism Just a Sophisticated Form of Passivity?
Stoicism is often sold as a practical toolkit for modern life, but I find its core premise—that we should focus only on what we control—deeply problematic. When I lost my job last year, the advice to 'just control my reactions' felt like a way to avoid confronting systemic injustices that were actually the cause. If Stoicism leads us to accept unfair circumstances rather than fight them, isn't it just a sophisticated form of passivity? I'm genuinely torn because some of its practices have helped me, but I can't shake the feeling that it discourages necessary discomfort and change.
