Are standardized tests fairer than subjective admissions?
Standardized tests like the SAT are better predictors of college success than high school GPA, yet we're dropping them left and right. A 2020 study from the University of California found that test scores added valuable info for predicting freshman grades, especially for students from less privileged backgrounds. Sure, the tests are imperfect and coaching creates gaps, but removing them doesn't fix inequality—it just makes admissions more subjective. Are we throwing out a flawed but useful tool for one that's more opaque?
