Do standardized tests measure merit or privilege?
Standardized tests like the SAT and ACT were designed to level the playing field, but after tutoring high schoolers for five years, I've seen how easily wealth buys a higher score. The correlation between family income and test performance is striking, and it makes me question whether these exams actually measure potential or just privilege. Are we clinging to a metric that rewards resources rather than reasoning, and should that change how we admit students?
