Standardized tests like the SAT and ACT have long been the gatekeeper for college admissions, but after years of tutoring students from different backgrounds, I doubt they measure much beyond test-taking skill. My best students—curious, creative, and hardworking—often score worse than peers who simply knew how to crack the pattern. Is it fair to let a few hours on a Saturday decide who gets into a good school, especially when wealthier families can afford expensive prep courses? I think requiring these scores does more to preserve privilege than to identify potential, and that alone makes the practice questionable.
