Soft skills like communication and teamwork are often called essential, but I've seen hiring managers pick the candidate with a harder technical portfolio every single time, even when that person struggles to explain their own code. In my last performance review, my manager praised my ability to mediate conflicts, yet the promotion went to the guy who shipped features faster and barely spoke to anyone. Are we actually rewarding soft skills, or just paying lip service to them while chasing measurable output?
