Soft skills like communication and adaptability are often labeled as the key to career success, but I think technical skills still matter more for getting hired in most fields. I've reviewed resumes for our engineering team, and we filter for hard skills first — a candidate who can't code won't get an interview even if they're great at teamwork. Yet once someone is in the door, weak soft skills can stall a project more than a missing technical tool. So, are we overvaluing soft skills in hiring, or are they truly the bottleneck for long-term growth?
