Single-use plastic bans are spreading across cities, but I'm not convinced they actually fix the waste problem. In my town, the ban on plastic bags just pushed people to buy thicker 'reusable' bags that they toss after a few uses—those are heavier and create more landfill mass. I've read that some municipalities saw a drop in bag litter, but overall plastic waste barely changed because people switched to paper or bought new bags constantly. Should we keep pushing bans, or are they just a feel-good policy that ignores how we consume?
