I've been coaching youth soccer for six seasons, and I still wrestle with how much to prioritize winning over player development, especially with kids under twelve. Some parents pay for private training and expect trophies, while others just want their children to enjoy the game and learn teamwork. Given that most of these players won't turn professional, shouldn't we be measuring success by long-term growth and love for the sport rather than the scoreboard? Or is competition itself the best teacher, even at this age?
