I've spent the last decade teaching history, and I've noticed that most textbooks still frame colonial powers as the 'discoverers' of lands that were already inhabited. My students often ask why we celebrate Columbus Day when Indigenous communities were here first, and I don't have a great answer. Should we fundamentally rethink how we teach colonial history, or is there still value in the traditional narrative?
