I've taught high school math for 12 years, and I see more students failing algebra because they can't do basic fractions than because they don't understand the concepts. We keep pushing abstract formulas while kids struggle with the arithmetic underneath. Should we focus more on computational fluency in earlier grades, even if it means less time for 'real-world' problem solving? I'm not sure drilling times tables is the answer either, but something has to change when a 16-year-old can't estimate 15% of 80 mentally. Yes or no, is our current math curriculum prioritizing the wrong skills?
