Falling birth rates in countries like South Korea and Italy are usually called a national emergency, but I see them as a sign of women finally getting real choices about their lives and careers. The panic over population decline ignores that we've built economies dependent on endless growth, not that fewer humans is inherently bad. Sure, aging societies strain pensions and healthcare—I've read projections for Japan that are grim—but we could redesign those systems instead of pushing people to have kids they don't want. Maybe the crisis isn't the shrinking population, but our refusal to adapt to it.
