Are vintage lenses worth the loss of sharpness?
Shooting with vintage lenses on my mirrorless camera has been eye-opening, but the softness wide open frustrates me. Modern glass nails sharpness at f/1.8, while my 50mm f/1.4 from 1975 looks dreamy but not crisp. I've missed focus on more portraits than I'd like, yet the character in the bokeh is something today's sterile optics can't match. Is chasing that classic look worth sacrificing the technical clarity we now take for granted?
