Are sugary drink taxes effective in fighting obesity?
Raising taxes on sugary drinks is an effective way to combat obesity, but I've seen the data from Mexico's 2014 soda tax showing only a 7.6% drop in purchases over two years, which seems modest. On the other hand, my own experience with a local convenience store suggests people just switch to other high-calorie options. Do we really believe such taxes change behavior enough to justify the burden on low-income households?
