Should schools adopt a year-round calendar to combat summer learning loss?
Public schools should switch to year-round calendars to close the achievement gap. I taught for six years and saw how much students forget over the summer — especially kids from lower-income homes who don't have camp or travel. A balanced calendar with shorter breaks might help, but it also complicates family schedules and school maintenance. Is reducing summer learning loss worth giving up the traditional summer break?
