Plastic bag bans reduce visible litter, but they often push people toward thicker plastic bags that are worse for the environment. In California, single-use bag bans led to a spike in purchases of those heavier reusable bags, many of which end up in landfills anyway. Are we really solving the problem or just making ourselves feel better?
