Plastic bag bans are spreading across Southeast Asia, but I'm not convinced they're the environmental win they're made out to be. Sure, my city in Vietnam saw a drop in roadside litter after the ban, but people just switched to thicker 'reusable' bags that they toss after a few uses. Those need more oil to produce and still end up in landfills. Should policymakers focus on banning thin bags, or is that just a feel-good move that ignores the real waste problem? Maybe we need to rethink the whole consumption cycle, not just the bag at the checkout counter.
