Nuclear power is the only realistic path to cutting carbon emissions while keeping the grid stable, but most people I talk to dismiss it because of Fukushima and Chernobyl. I've read that modern reactors have passive safety systems, and France gets over 70% of its electricity from nuclear without the disasters we fear. Yet the waste problem and the enormous upfront cost still make me hesitate—are we trading one risk for another?
