My hometown is shrinking — we've lost 20% of our residents since 1990, and every week a clinic or shop closes. I wonder if the fear of population decline is actually about losing young people, not just numbers. In Japan, some villages pay families to move in, but is that just delaying the inevitable? Maybe we should accept that some places will naturally fade and focus resources on thriving cities instead. But wouldn't that abandon the people who stayed?
