My favorite building in the city is the old central library, but I often wonder if its beautiful marble facade is worth the upkeep when a modern glass tower could house more books and people. Architects today seem obsessed with sustainability, yet some of the greenest designs look like concrete bunkers from the outside. Should we prioritize function and energy efficiency over the visual poetry that makes a city memorable, or is beauty itself a form of sustainability because it makes people care enough to preserve a structure for generations?
