Should literature be challenging rather than easy entertainment?
Modernist novels like Ulysses are often called unreadable, but I think the difficulty is the point. I slogged through it last year and found the stream-of-consciousness technique actually mirrors how real memory and thought fragment. Maybe we ask too much for literature to be easy entertainment when it should challenge our perception. Isn't artificial complexity just a way for critics to justify their jobs though?
