Mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenses do more harm than good to our communities. I've seen a neighbor serve five years for possession while the actual dealer walked free, and the cost to his family was devastating. These laws remove judicial discretion and often punish the addict more than the supplier. Don't we need sentencing reform that focuses on rehabilitation rather than rigid punishment?
