Local newspapers are shutting down at an alarming rate, and I've watched three in my region close in just two years. Hyperlocal reporting catches corruption and community issues that national outlets never touch. Without these papers, who holds local councils and school boards accountable? I'm not convinced that a few bloggers or social media pages can fill that void, but maybe I'm being pessimistic about digital alternatives.
