Living in a car-dependent suburb for 15 years has convinced me that walkable neighborhoods are not just a nice-to-have. I've watched my own kids miss out on independence because every trip to a friend's house requires a parent chauffeur. But can we really retrofit existing sprawl without displacing the residents who can least afford it? The money and political will seem to always favor new highways over missing middle housing, and that's why I lean YES—we do need to prioritize walkability, but only with strict anti-displacement measures in place.
