Is learning a second language as an adult really worth the effort?
Learning a second language as an adult is often framed as a heroic struggle, but I wonder if the real payoff is being oversold. I spent two years grinding through Spanish apps and classes, only to freeze when a native speaker asked me for directions in Madrid. The brain's plasticity does decline with age, yet immersion programs for adults show consistent gains—so maybe the problem is our methods, not our age. Is the effort truly worth it for someone who will never need the language professionally, or are we just chasing a cultural status symbol?
