Last month I sat in seat 14A on a transatlantic flight and caught myself checking the engine every few minutes, even though I've flown 150 times without incident. Driving to the airport in rush hour felt far more dangerous, yet my brain won't let go of the idea that being 38,000 feet up is risky. Why are we wired to fear aviation more than automobiles when the stats on flight safety are so clear, and does that irrationality ever lead to worse decisions, like avoiding travel or choosing riskier roads? I'm asking because I want to know if others share this bias and how they manage it.
