I've been through three therapists in five years and only one actually helped me, so I'm starting to think that the effectiveness of mental health therapy depends more on the individual therapist than on the type of therapy itself. My first was CBT-focused, and I felt like I was just learning tricks to rationalize away my anxiety, not really dealing with why it was there. The one who helped me used a mix of approaches and took time to understand my history, which made all the difference. Could it be that the whole debate about which therapeutic method is 'best' is missing the point, and we should focus on the quality of the therapeutic relationship instead?
