Mechanical keyboards are all the rage these days, but I've been using a $20 membrane keyboard for five years and never felt the need to upgrade. Sure, the tactile feedback on a mechanical switch feels nicer in a store demo, but does that justify spending $150 or more on a hobbyists' luxury item? I've seen coworkers buy expensive custom boards and then complain about key wobble or lube jobs. For everyday typing and gaming, the difference in speed or accuracy is negligible once you're used to it. Maybe the real benefit is just the satisfying click sound, which you can't even hear if you're wearing headphones. Is the premium worth it, or is it mostly hype?
