Is overtourism actually destroying the authentic character of places like Kyoto or Venice, or are we just romanticizing a past that never really existed? I've traveled to both recently and saw crowds, yes, but also locals who seem to benefit from the money tourists bring. The tension between preserving culture and economic survival is real, but I'm not sure blanket restrictions on tourism are the answer. Maybe the focus should be on spreading visitors out rather than limiting them altogether.
