Should private companies lead the next big leap in space exploration?
Is it realistic to expect private companies to lead the next big leap in human space exploration, or does that responsibility still rest on government agencies like NASA? With SpaceX landing rockets routinely and Blue Origin selling tourist seats, the private sector has clearly brought cost efficiency and innovation, but I remember how the Apollo program depended on massive public funding and a national sense of purpose. Watching launches from Kennedy Space Center last spring, I felt both awe at the technology and a nagging question about whether profit motives can sustain long-term goals like colonizing Mars. I lean toward saying yes, private enterprise can do it, but only with government as a customer and regulator, so maybe the real question is whether we're okay mixing public ambition with corporate profit.
