Is approving coal defensible while the Great Barrier Reef is at risk?
Would you trade the Great Barrier Reef if the payout was cheaper electricity for 3 million Queensland households? I keep running the numbers on the Carmichael coal approvals, and the jobs figure I hear quoted is around 1,200 ongoing roles, while reef tourism supports somewhere near 60,000 across Cairns and the Whitsundays. A friend who dives for a living in Port Douglas says the bleaching events in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2022 have already thinned his bookings by roughly a third. I'm honestly not sure whether blocking new thermal coal exports would dent national GDP much, or whether Australia just exports the same tons from other basins. So is it defensible to keep approving coal while the reef is on the line?
