If we ever make contact with an alien civilization, should we even respond, or just listen first? I was reading about the Fermi paradox last night, and it struck me how little we know about what's out there—maybe they're peaceful, maybe they're not. Some scientists argue any transmission reveals our location and could invite disaster, while others say silence is cowardly and we owe it to curiosity to reach out. Me, I'd probably want to study them for decades before saying hello, but I'm not sure patience is a luxury we'd have if they're already watching. What would you do if you were in charge of that first message?
