Are classroom devices harming student focus?
I've spent the last six years teaching in a public high school where every classroom now has a one-to-one device program, and the difference in how students learn is not what the tech advocates promised. We were told that tablets would make lessons more engaging and personalized, but what I actually see is a generation that struggles to read a full page of text without checking notifications. The research on screen time and academic performance is mixed, but my own experience with hundreds of teenagers makes me wonder if we're sacrificing deep focus for the illusion of innovation. Standardized test scores at my school have stayed flat since we went digital, while attention spans seem to shrink every year. Should we really be betting our children's education on devices that are designed to distract them?
