I've spent the last eight years teaching in three different school districts, and the dress codes I've enforced are getting more restrictive every year—especially toward girls. Last spring, a 14-year-old in my class was sent to the office because her tank top straps were 'too thin,' even though it was 90 degrees and the classroom had no air conditioning. Is a dress code like this really about maintaining a learning environment, or has it become an arbitrary exercise of control that targets female students and shames them for their bodies? I think these policies are outdated and need to be reconsidered, and I say that as someone who used to defend them without question.
