I've spent six years doing fieldwork with indigenous communities in Borneo, and the more I learn, the less I believe that outsider anthropologists can truly represent their subjects. Even with consent and collaboration, we filter everything through our own cultural lens, and our final papers often serve academic careers more than the people we study. Should we accept that our discipline is inherently extractive and work to dismantle it, or is there still value in our external perspective for documentation and advocacy?
