Does Hiring with Too Much Focus on Soft Skills Undermine Real Competence?
I've reviewed over 300 resumes in the past year for mid-level tech roles, and I keep seeing the same template: 'detail-oriented team player with excellent communication skills.' But when candidates get to the technical interview, many can't explain a basic system design problem. We're so focused on soft skills in hiring that we might be letting polished talk overshadow actual competence. Is that fair to the candidates who are brilliant engineers but don't interview well?
