Is venting anger actually healthy?
I've read dozens of pop psychology articles claiming that venting your anger is healthy, but my own experience as a therapist suggests otherwise. For the past decade, I've watched clients who 'let it all out' in sessions often feel worse afterward, while those who practice cognitive reappraisal—reframing the situation—show more lasting relief. The idea that catharsis purges rage seems to ignore that it can reinforce aggressive neural pathways instead. Should we really encourage people to express every burst of frustration, or is that just a cultural myth we've accepted without evidence?
