I've noticed that many parents in my neighborhood let their kids play outside only in supervised groups, but I wonder if we're overprotecting them. Free, unsupervised play teaches risk assessment and social problem-solving that structured activities just don't provide. My own childhood was full of independent roaming, and I turned out fine—but the world has changed, hasn't it? Should we trust children more to navigate their own minor conflicts and dangers, or is today's increased supervision a necessary response to real risks?
