I've noticed that in sociology classes, we often treat social norms as fixed rules, but my own fieldwork in a small Vietnamese village showed me how quickly norms shift when economic pressures change. For example, elderly parents used to live with their eldest son, but now many move in with daughters who earn more. Could it be that what we call 'social order' is just a temporary agreement that we mistake for something permanent?
