I've hired over 40 people in the last five years, and I always look for soft skills like communication and adaptability before technical expertise. But I'm starting to wonder if we've oversold these traits—many candidates shine in interviews yet struggle with basic problem-solving once hired. Soft skills are valuable, sure, but can they truly compensate for a lack of hard skills in a technical role? I've seen teams where everyone gets along great but deadlines slip because no one can actually code or analyze data properly. Maybe we're setting the bar too low on technical ability in favor of personality, and that imbalance is hurting real productivity in the long run.
