I've been wrestling with whether it's ethical to keep a pet parrot when studies show that many species have the cognitive ability of a 3-year-old child and naturally fly up to 30 miles a day. We keep them in cages, clip their wings, and expect them to thrive on our schedule. But is our companionship really a fair trade for their freedom, or are we just rationalizing a lifelong imprisonment for our own enjoyment? I'm leaning towards no, but I admit I love my birds too much to give them up easily.
