Do pets really understand our emotions and intentions?
I've been watching how my neighbor treats her rescued street dog versus how she talks to her purebred from a breeder, and the difference in her tone and patience is striking. Do animals actually understand human intentions, or are we just projecting our own emotions onto them? A few months ago, my cat hid for three days after I accidentally stepped on her tail, which made me wonder if she was holding a grudge or simply scared. I've read studies showing dogs can read our facial expressions, but I'm not convinced that means they grasp concepts like forgiveness or spite. What's your take—when your pet seems to ignore you after a scolding, is that real understanding or just my imagination?
